By opening the fist more or less widely and by blowing gently or more forcefully, but always dryly, the special modulation ability allows deceptively lifelike, plaintive tones to be produced without difficulty, which are intended to sound like a wailing "wah, wah, wah" (the B is silent and is intended only to indicate the prolonged note). The pitch of the hare's cry lies between that of the old and young hare, which is why the instrument can be used successfully all year round. If the sound has suffered due to excessive moisture, turn the instrument upside down and blow through it forcefully but dryly. Forcible opening is to be avoided at all costs.
